What do your answers tell you?

Here are the answers and explanations in terms of what statements show good time management skills:

  1. TRUE. Having a to-do list is a key to organization and time management.
  2. FALSE. Putting things off to the last minute may be a sign that you’re not setting and sticking to priorities. It’s usually hard to do your best if you’re anxious and rushing to be on time. And it surely doesn’t feel good!
  3. FALSE. Interruptions disturb your concentration. Each time you stop working to engage with someone, you need to spend more time getting refocused on your assignment. Create a strategy for people who interrupt you. You might say something like, “I’m really into this task right now. Can we set up a time to have a cup of coffee in a little while?” You might even put a sign on your door or cubicle that says “Hard at work: Please come back!”
  4. FALSE. Let’s face it: emails can be a major distraction. If you check every email as it comes in, you’re disrupting your work flow. Most emails aren’t critical and if they are, they’ll usually arrive with a “!” mark to let you know. Set a time once or twice a day to go through your accumulated emails rather than all through the day.
  5. FALSE. You get kudos for setting up a plan. Planning is a primary part of time management. However, sometimes an urgent assignment comes up. When that happens, check your with your supervisor to find out if the new task needs immediate attention. If so, try to flex your plan to fit.
  6. TRUE. If you make time for “you,” you’re doing a good job of balancing your work and life. Worklife balance is key to maintaining your health, mental wellbeing and ability to be productive.
  7. FALSE. Communication is very important at work. Good managers should welcome questions about which assignments to prioritize. It’s a strong sign that you care about your work and the team’s goals.
  8. TRUE. People who “inhale” lunch may not work as effectively as those who take a real break. Lunchtime isn’t an indulgence—it’s a midday timeout so you can re-boot your body and mind for the rest of the day.
